We want to update you and clarify the information that was recently sent to members of Volleyball BC about the upcoming season. Due to COVID-19, this season will look much different than it has in the past. We want to assure you that we have put in place protocols to keep our athletes, coaches and families safe, while offering high-level programs so we can continue to offer our Ducks Family the best training available. While we are still working through some challenges to secure facilities and qualified coaches, we are extremely optimistic that we will be able to put in place an amazing club season. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this situation.

key points

*Athletes from other clubs are welcome. Please email info@ducksvolleyball.ca for more information about our club, spots available, and the application period.

*Review the important dates and information from Volleyball BC and our Ducks approach to the upcoming season. The Ducks will be offering a 12U-14U Winter Train and Play Program for Male and Female athletes who do not make club teams and/or are new to the sport of volleyball. We will do our best to create a comprehensive training program for these athletes to encourage the growth of volleyball.

*The Ducks will be using the early signing period and athlete application period to complete as many teams as possible. Tryouts will only be used to complete rosters if necessary and for younger age levels if required. We will publish more information when final decisions have been made.

*The Ducks will run as many teams as possible based on the amount of gym space and qualified coaches we have. We are always looking for great people to be a part of the club. If you are interested in coaching please complete the coaching application on our homepage.

Volleyball BC | Early Signing Period | October 15 – November 15

Volleyball BC | Early Signing Period | October 15 – November 15

  • Clubs may sign up to 12 athletes per team.
  • Clubs may only sign athletes that were part of their club in 2020.

The Ducks will begin to offer athletes early signing beginning on Monday, October 26th and extend to the end of the signing period. An athlete that accepts the early signing offer will be guaranteed a place on a Ducks team for 2021.  All athletes that accept early signing will take part in a Ducks only mandatory team placement session for 2021. This team placement session may also include athletes that have been selected by the Ducks Executive via the athlete application period. If rosters are not complete following the application period, an open tryout will be scheduled to complete the rosters.

The number of athletes that will be early signed will vary by age group and will be based on various factors, including gym availability and coaches, however, the Ducks will look to pre-sign between 70-85% of our capacity at each age group. For example, if the Ducks only have the capacity to run 2 teams at an age group, we my look to early sign 16-20 athletes out of 24 spots to allow athletes to enter the Ducks through application and/or tryouts.

The Ducks are working diligently to finalize gym times and coaches to accurately determine the number of teams that will be available for 2021. Once we have finalized this information, we will communicate it on our website. If you know anyone interested in coaching volleyball, please have them apply on our Ducks website. If we do not have enough coaches, we will not be able to run teams. We offer mentorship and in-house Ducks, coaching training.

It is important to understand that the Ducks are looking to limit the number of tryouts due to COVID-19. We are seeking to create as many teams as possible through the early signing and athlete application periods. We recognize this does not work effectively for all age levels and will adapt our process as necessary. Athletes and families need to understand that there may be limited opportunities for club volleyball in 2021, by accepting an early signing offer, you are committed to the Ducks for 2021, regardless of the team you are placed on from the team placement session.

Volleyball BC | Athlete Application Period | November 16 – December 5

Volleyball BC | Athlete Application Period | November 16 – December 5

  • Applications may be accepted without an athlete participating in tryouts.

The Ducks will use the athlete application period to complete our athlete identification, athletes that are identified will be asked to take part in the mandatory team placement session. We strongly suggest that returning Ducks athletes that have not received the early signing offer or have declined the early signing offer, apply during this time. The athlete application period will also be the time when athletes interested in moving to a different club are permitted to apply. The Ducks Executive will look at each application thoroughly to determine if the skill and ability of each athlete is a good fit for our teams. All athletes that are accepted into the Ducks through application, will then attend a mandatory team placement session to determine the actual team placement of each athlete. Athletes and families need to understand that there may be limited opportunities for club volleyball in 2021, by accepting an athletes application offer, you are committed to the Ducks for 2021, regardless of the team you are placed on from the team placement session. If rosters are not full following the application period, an open tryout will be scheduled to complete the rosters.

Volleyball BC | Tryout Period | January 2 - 31

Volleyball BC | Tryout Period | January 2 – 31

  • Tryouts may NOT have more than 50 people in the gym (this includes coaches and staff), no more than 12 per court, and must adhere to all Return to Play protocols as listed by Volleyball BC.
  • At the end of tryouts, athletes may not participate in any team training until 14 days after their last tryout

Formal tryouts have not been scheduled at this point as the Ducks are attempting to identify as many athletes and put in place as many teams as possible without tryouts for safety and logistical concerns. Each age group will be thoroughly examined, and tryouts will be run when necessary to provide the best opportunities for as many athletes to play volleyball this season as possible. We will announce tryouts and age groups, once we have finalized this information at the end of November.

Sincerely,
Bryan Gee
Ducks Volleyball
Chief Executive Officer
